Military Vehicle Cooling Pumps

RST-V PumpBarber-Nichols, Inc. ( BNI ) offers a wide range of preexisting and custom designed electrically driven Military Vehicle Cooling Pumps. The military vehicles of the future are undergoing a transformation. They are becoming lighter; smaller; faster; more lethal; more adaptable; and they are being packed with electronics that will improve communications, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

RST-VFurthermore, improvements to vehicle survivability and reliability are also being made. As a result, the vehicle's individual components must also be smaller, lighter, more efficient, and more reliable. As propulsion power densities are being increased, hybrid drive systems are being utilized, and multiple high-power electronic systems are being installed, reliable cooling systems are paramount.

BNI designs and manufactures a variety of water/glycol and thermal oil Military Vehicle Cooling Pumps. Barber-Nichols' world class engineering staff can help determine whether an existing pump or a custom design will be most beneficial for your vehicle. BNI has designed and manufactured light-weight, 600 Vdc permanent magnet, 400 Hz induction, air cooled, liquid cooled, mechanically sealed, and hermetic pumps. Additionally, Barber-Nichols places a strong emphasis on Design for Manufacturability because designing the cost out of a product results in a better, lower total cost product that meets the customer's requirements and is easier to manufacture.

BNI Has Supplied Military Vehicle Cooling Pumps for the Following Programs:

  • The Pegasus Class Patrol Hydrofoil Missile ( PHM ) for Boeing Marine Systems and the U.S. Navy
  • The Landing Craft, Air Cushioned (LCAC) for Textron Marine
  • The C-130 Air Transport
  • The Reconnaissance, Surveillance & Targeting Vehicle ( RST -V) Technology Demonstrator for General Dynamics Land Systems
  • The Advanced Hybrid Electric Drive (AHED) 8X8 Technology Demonstrator for General Dynamics Land Systems
  • The Crusader 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer Prototype for United Defense and the U.S. Army

Model 7444000 Barber-Nichols manufactures the Model 744000 Aeronautic Cooling Pump for the C-130. The pump is designed around a closed coupled, centrifugal configuration with an integral shaft seal. It weighs a mere 4.3 kg (9.5 lbs) and pumps a 50/50 mixture of ethylene-glycol and water.

C130The three-phase, 400 Hz powered motor is driven by 800 watts of 120/208 volt AC power. BNI can design custom, or modify existing, aeronautic system pumps to accommodate a wide variety of military applications including, but not limited to, electronic cooling, environmental control, hydraulics, life support, and lubrication.

Crusader FanBarber-Nichols designed and manufactured the prototype Engine Compartment Cooling Fan for the Crusader 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer. The fan is designed around a single stage axial flow configuration, is driven by a brushless DC motor, and has a variable speed drive to maintain efficiency.

CrusaderThis 84 horse power fan weighs 77 kg (170 lbs), produces discharge pressure at 61 cm (24 in) of water, and a volumetric flow rate at 23,786 m3 /hr (14,000 ACFM). BNI can design custom, or modify existing, fans to accommodate a wide variety of military applications including, but not limited to, engine cooling; general cooling; and process gas transfer.

Barber-Nichols can provide the full range of services from in-depth engineering analyses of a prototype and System Design & Development (SDD) phases, to qualification program support, to Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) and production quantity manufacturing. If you need an expedited proof-of-concept unit for your technology demonstrator, let us create an optimized design to your specifications! Let Barber-Nichols provide you with an engineered solution to your demanding Military Vehicle Cooling Needs!
